Holmes Hall
Washington University

Near the center of Washington University's campus in St. Louis, Missouri, lies a 19th century library space whose late 20th century architectural revitalization has breathed new life into its Renaissance detail. Ornamental chandeliers and reproduction of period sconces uncovered in archival photographs serve as unifying elements amid the splendor of this richly textured architecture. No modern lighting equipment is revealed in the room. Ceiling uplighting and end-wall highlighting is accomplished from accent lights concealed within architectural valances at the base of the windows and within the chandelier.

The resultant lighting design honors the Hall's storied past and architectural heritage while giving the University a new on-campus setting for both fundraisers and student gatherings.
